The Canadian government awarded licenses to XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio allowing the broadcasters to offer their services in Canada.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission approved June 16 licenses for Sirius Canada Inc. and XM’s Canadian Satellite Radio Inc. for subscription radio services to be delivered by satellite and terrestrial transmitters. Canada’s Chum Ltd. also received a license to offer subscription radio services through terrestrial transmitters only.
