Satpoint, a provider of broadband satellite communications for marine platforms, introduced a service that provides Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) to public switched telephone network termination services.

The service allows subscribers to place a call from the ships terminal using Satpoint’s Bitmax service and routing it over the public Internet. The call may be terminated directly in the company’s private exchange on land, in another VoIP phone or routed to the public telephone network. The calls are only charged at local tariffs.

Satpoint introduced VoIP connectivity in its BitMax VSAT SCPC/DAMA service and marine VSAT DVB-RCS service earlier this year.
