Xinhuanet reported April 21 that The China Satellite Communications Corp. (Chinasat) signed a 100 million euros ($130.7 million) contract with Alcatel Space for a communications and live radio and TV broadcast satellite. According to the report, the satellite will be named Chinasat 9 and will carry 22 Ku-band transponders. An executive from Chinasat was quoted in the article as saying the satellite will be used for live broadcasts from the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing.
