The demonstration satellite that was placed in a lower than expected orbit by the test launch of the Boeing Delta 5 Heavy on Dec. 21 was built by students at Arizona State University. According to a Dec. 23 report in the online version of the East Valley Tribune, engineering students at ASU’s Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering built the 3CS communications satellite. It consisted of two aluminum cylinders containing electromagnetic equipment. According to the report, students attempted to make contact with the satellite after its launch, but were unable to. Students assume the satellite has either burned up or is floating in another orbit, the report said.
