Finnish satellite imagery provider Iceye has expanded its work with a customer in the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine to ensure Ukraine’s armed forces continue to receive a high volume of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data.
The agreement announced Jan. 19 provides the customer within Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence with expanded access to Iceye’s SAR imagery. Iceye noted that SAR is particularly valuable in Ukraine because it can be captured at night and through clouds, while environmental conditions in Ukraine can obstruct traditional sensors.
Iceye has supported Ukraine with satellite imagery in the war with Russia since 2022. In 2022, Iceye transferred full capabilities of one of its SAR satellites already in orbit for the government of Ukraine’s use over the region, working with a foundation. Iceye has also worked to ensure its commercial imagery is not shared with countries or entities hostile to Ukraine.
“This agreement strengthens assured access to our high-resolution SAR imagery, helping Ukraine make decisions faster and with greater confidence. Iceye stands firmly with Ukraine in the face of these hostilities, and is deeply committed to strengthening Europe’s security more widely by ensuring our allies have the best decision-ready data when they need it most,” he continued,” commented John Cartwright, Iceye’s senior vice president of Data Product.
