ATK Ares-1 Static Fire Test Set For September After Successful Integration

[Satellite TODAY 07-12-10] Alliant Techsystems (ATK) and NASA have completed installation work on the second Ares 1 first stage five-segment development motor (DM-2) in preparation for its static-fire test scheduled for early September, NASA announced July 9.
    Acting as prime contractor for the Ares 1 first stake, ATK designed the engine with a focus on astronaut safety in efforts to provide the United States with a reliable launch capability for both crew and cargo missions. The motor, which is 154 feet in length and 12 feet in diameter, has been installed horizontally in a NASA test stand in Utah. Results from this test will be compared with data from the ground test of the first five-segment motor and Ares 1-X test flight, which were both completed in 2009.
    The information gathered will be used to evaluate performance, roll control, acoustics, motor vibrations, oscillations, nozzle modifications and insulation upgrades.
    NASA said the installation work was completed on time and that ATK is on schedule and within budget of their NASA Ares contract structure.
