[Satellite TODAY 02-19-2012] After a successful launch aboard an Arianespace Ariane-5 ECA rocket two weeks ago, Azerbaijan’s first telecommunications satellite, Azerspace/Africasat-1a, has reached its final orbital position at 46 degrees East. Orbital Sciences has successfully deployed the spacecraft’s solar arrays and reflectors. The satellite is expected to begin commercial operations by early March.
For the next two weeks, Azerspace/Africasat-1a will move into the payload IOT testing phase, and then handed over to Azercosmos, which will operate the spacecraft from its control center in Baku.
The satellite has an expected service life of 15 years and it is based on Orbital’s GEOStar-2 platform. Azerspace/Africasat-1a is a hybrid C- and Ku-band satellite that will provide communications services to Azerbaijan, Europe, Africa, Middle East and Central Asia.
