[Satellite TODAY 08-03-11] Despite increased deployment and utilization of LTE networks, mobile network operator data delivery costs could multiply 2010 cost levels by seven and surpass $370 billion annually by 2016, according to a Juniper Research report issued Aug. 2.
The report, authored by Juniper Analyst Windsor Holden, argued that while regulatory pricing controls will continue to negatively impact operator margins, future operating costs could be significantly reduced by the deployment of data offload solutions, combined with network optimization techniques.
Holden also suggested that mobile operators consider leveraging core assets to develop new revenue streams in areas such as cloud platform provision and machine-to-machine services.

“There is potential for substantial savings at the base station level for operators in developed markets, with both active and passive network sharing as a means of reducing site lease costs and reducing energy loss by using feeder-less sites and remote radio heads,” said Holden. “Operators in developing markets that are reliant on diesel to power off-grid generators should accelerate their transition to renewable alternatives.
