DirecTV Field Service Provider Faces Lawsuit from Technicians

[Satellite TODAY 07-06-10] A class-action lawsuit was filed July 1 against DirecTV field service provider Multiband Corp. on behalf of satellite installers and technicians who claim they were treated as independent contractors when they should have been treated as employees.
The lawsuit claims that because Multiband exercised substantial control over their work, the satellite installers and technicians should have been compensated for overtime pay.
“Like the Department of Labor, we are focusing our attention on so-called ‘independent contractors’ because we truly believe that this is a rampant problem in many industries, especially in the cable and satellite television arena. These installers work extremely long hours, are usually paid only what they earn in ‘piece-rates,’ and work under the control of companies who operate a scheme to avoid paying overtime. It’s not right,” the Plaintiffs’ attorney Rachhana Srey said in a statement.
DirecTV and Multiband have not commented on the lawsuit.
