[Satellite TODAY 02-16-10] Solaris Mobile has unveiled the Solaris Mobile Pocket Gateway, an S-band mobile gateway device for smartphones, the company announced Feb. 15.
The pocket-sized S-band receiver, developed in conjunction with Finnish company Elektrobit, decodes DVB-SH TV, radio and data streams and relays them over Wi-Fi via a mini-Web server built into the device. This technology is compatible with Wi-Fi and a Web browser to access mobile TV and radio over Solaris Mobile’s hybrid network without modifications.
“This is a significant step forward in the development of the S-band ecosystem and solves the problem of how to get compatible handsets into the market place, permitting the user to choose his preferred mobile phone and have the benefit of being able to access a range of high quality mobile TV and multimedia services,” Solaris Mobile CEO Steve Maine said in a statement.
