[Satellite TODAY 09-09-09] Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) has won a contract from Astrium to launch an Earth observation satellite it designed for its recently acquired subsidiary, Surrey Satellite Technology (SSTL), aboard a Falcon 1e rocket, SpaceX announced Sept. 8.
The Falcon 1e is an enhanced version of SpaceX’s Falcon 1 launch vehicle with upgraded propulsion, structures and avionics systems.
SpaceX said the partnership with Astrium paves the way for potential future cooperation. “This Falcon 1e contract allows Astrium to provide a competitive solution for in-orbit delivery of an Earth observation satellite in low Earth orbit. This deal will ultimately benefit customers seeking innovative and low-cost solutions for valuable Earth observation programs,” said Evert Dudok CEO of Astrium Satellites, in a statement.
Financial details of the contract were not disclosed.
