Sonatel, the main telco of Senegal, a country with a population of over 19 million people, has completed a significant teleport upgrade working with Eutelsat OneWeb. Sonatel has upgraded and expanded its Gandoul teleport by deploying the Eutelsat OneWeb Satellite Portal Network (SPN). The infrastructure comprises of 16 satellite antennas deployed across approximately 5 hectares, along with a technical facility meeting Tier III standards. Sonatel announced the upgrade, July 9.
Sonatel aims to position Senegal as a regional hub for satellite and digital connectivity in West Africa. This new gateway will make it possible to strengthen Senegal’s digital sovereignty. It will also help secure and diversify international connectivity routes. It will improve network resilience against technical and geopolitical disruptions. It will accelerate digital inclusion and access to broadband. The Gandoul facilities incorporate secure power infrastructure, redundant systems, and ultra-high-speed fiber connectivity, ensuring a high level of availability and service continuity.
“With the deployment of this Eutelsat OneWeb Gateway and its 16 next-generation satellite antennas, Sonatel is strengthening its established teleport and reaffirming its commitment to long-term investment in top-tier digital infrastructure serving Senegal and Africa,” Sonatel CEO Brelotte Ba said in a statement.
