[Satellite Today 01-22-09] KVH Industries and ViaSat extended the reach of their mini-VSAT broadband service to Alaska, the west coast of Canada and the United States, Hawaii and Asia, the companies announced Jan. 21.
The Ku-band service provides broadband voice and data to vessels and jets crossing the Pacific Ocean, the Caribbean, North Atlantic and Mediterranean waters.
“We have now successfully rolled out a single, unified broadband service across roughly two-thirds of the world’s major shipping and aeronautical lanes,” Martin Kits Van Heyningen, CEO of KVH, said in a statement. KVH’s goal is provide global coverage, he said.
ViaSat, who provides its ArcLight broadband technology to the service, said the expansion is expected to yield new customers to its mobile business.
