[Satellite Today 01-08-09] TerreStar Networks and protocol stack software supplier Comneon demonstrated the first Voice Over IP (VOIP) phone call on an integrated satellite-terrestrial multi-mode handset from a Comneon test lab, TerreStar announced Jan. 7.
    TerreStar plans to operate an integrated satellite-terrestrial communications network for North America that will use an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) to deliver ubiquitous access and personalized applications and services over wireless devices such as mobile phones and personal digital assistants.
    The TerreStar handset, designed by Elektrobit, uses the Comneon IMS Device Framework as a client solution for its next generation integrated mobile satellite and terrestrial communications network. TerreStar is planning to launch its commercial satellite, TerreStar-1 in June.
