[Satellite TODAY 01-26-12] About 90 percent of teleport operators said that their biggest terrestrial transmission problems occur in localized infrastructure, and that the cost and availability of high-quality service can become a deal-breaker for an otherwise promising opportunity, according to a World Teleport Association (WTA) report published Jan. 25.
The report, “How to Reduce Costs and Optimize Use of the Local Loop,” calls the local loop a paradoxical part of a teleport’s satellite and fiber connectivity, but added that the revenue generated from reselling local transmissions is small.
“This is an extremely competitive business and teleport operators are finding that understanding and optimizing their use of local connectivity can have an impact on their success far greater than the costs and revenues suggest,” WTA Executive Director Robert Bell said in a statement.
