Analyst: Satellite Radio Providers Should Capitalize On Retail Censorship
[Satellite Today 05-27-09] Sirius XM could capitalize on the censorship policies of major retail outlets such as WalMart, according to Satellite Standard Group analyst, Tyler Savery.
“Some of the key selling points of satellite radio include commercial free music and no censorship. Getting the benefits of those qualities across to consumers has long been the challenge of the satellite radio marketing team. Sometimes the best marketing is to capitalize on the moves of others,” said Savery in a May 24 report, “Satellite Should Capitalize On WalMart’s Censorship.”
Savery cites a dispute between popular rock band, Green Day and WalMart, over the release of the band’s newest album, “21st Century Breakdown,” which WalMart has refused to carry due to the album’s explicit content. Savery said that WalMart’s aggressive effort to censor its products should be an opportunity for Sirius XM to promote itself as an exclusive content provider.
“In the past Sirius XM has had special artists weekends or even channels. Artist weekend oft coincide with the release of an album. Sirius XM should consider a Green day weekend. DJ’s should make mention of the event prior to playing Green Day songs from the album. With DJ’s speaking out about the issue, the perceived value of SDARS goes up in the mind of the subscriber,” said Savery.
