Globecomm-UTStarcom Develop Satellite IP Wireless Network Using Picocells

Globecomm Systems Inc. and UTStarcom Inc. have created a nationwide demonstration network linking multiple picocells serving their office buildings, with all the backhaul and call control provided via satellite through a flexible, cost-effective hosted solution, Globecomm announced April 2.

UTStarcom installed a code division multiple access (CDMA) switch at Globecomm’s Mobile Switching Center in New York, and picocell base stations at each Globecomm’s  office and its own offices in British Columbia, California, Illinois and Missouri.

"The Globecomm/UTStarcom demonstration network shows how quickly and cost-effectively an enterprise mobile network can be deployed across all of an organization’s campuses, regardless of the quality of local telecom infrastructure," said Globecomm vice president Stephen Yablonski.
