Orbital Sciences Corp. will make its second attempt to launch the Space Technology 5 (ST5) satellites for NASA March 22 after the first attempt was halted due to technical problems with the Pegasus rocket, Orbital said.

Orbital and NASA engineers could not determine the exact cause of why the Pegasus starboard flight control surface fin locking pin did not retract during the first launch attempt March 15, Orbital said. The most likely reason was the pin retractor system failed to operate due to ice buildup, and the mechanism has been replaced.

The three ST5 spacecraft are designed to test new technology. The window for the latest launch attempt opens at 8:57 a.m. and runs through 10:20 a.m. EST, with a targeted launch time of 9:02 a.m.
