Iridium Satellite LLC reported that the number of subscribers to its mobile satellite service has grown 30 percent from the beginning of 2005 to Nov. 1. Revenues also are up “substantially,” which Iridium attributes to income from new subscribers and increased usage from existing subscribers. The company does not release specific numbers from its financial reports.

“The maritime industry is a key core market for Iridium,” Iridium Executive Vice President Don Thoma said in a statement. Voice accounts for 75 percent of the traffic over Iridium satellites, but maritime data has increased by 60 percent in 2005, “twice the rate of growth for voice, and we expect this trend to continue for the foreseeable future,” he said.
