Radarsat-1 Marks 10 Years Of Operations
The Canadian Space Agency‘s Radarsat-1 satellite celebrated its 10th anniversary Nov. 4. The satellite, launched Nov. 4, 1995 and expected to operate only five years, has flown nearly 2.4 million kilometers. The radar imagery satellite was built to catalog Canada’s Arctic and provides 3,800 images per year to the Canadian Ice Service, the largest of its 600 clients. Radarsat-1’s use includes mapping, assistance in disaster management, scanning of water surfaces for oil spills and helping hydrologists manage water resources.
