An Ariane 5 rocket lofted the long-awaited Shin Satellite Plc‘s IPStar satellite into orbit Aug. 11, Arianespace announced.

The spacecraft, with a launch mass of 6,485 kilograms, is the largest commercial communications satellite placed in orbit to date, Arianespace said. This is the fourth Shin Satellite launch for Arianespace.

In the works for nearly a decade, the Space Systems/Loral-built IPStar, also known as Thaicom 4, is designed to provide business and commercial customers throughout Asia, Australia and New Zealand with various levels of Internet access services.
