The European Space Agency (ESA) completed an aircraft flight from Dakar to Mombassa using the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS), the European satellite navigation system. The mission could play a key role in boosting air traffic safety in Africa, ESA said.

According to ESA, the flight fully demonstrated that the Interregional Satellite Based Augmentation system (ISA), the EGNOS extension over Africa, meets the needs of the African continent in terms of reinforcing air traffic safety.

ASECNA (Agence pour la Sécurité de la Navigation Aérienne en Afrique et a Madagascar) provided the test plane and the Galileo Joint Undertaking financed the project.

EGNOS is a joint program of the European Space Agency, the European Commission and Eurocontrol, the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation.
