With the VSAT market for large enterprises providing limited growth opportunities, Hughes Network Systems (HNS) is setting its sight on medium-sized businesses to sell VSAT equipment and services, HNS Chairman and CEO Pradman Kaul told Satellite Today.

In particular, Kaul noted that many organizations, such as gas stations and larger, nationwide retailers already are covered by VSAT technology. In its place, he identified medium-sized businesses, such as fast food franchises, as a stronger market opportunity for VSAT services.

“We think what is driving this is the need to accept credit cards,” which are quickly becoming the norm for even the smallest transactions across the United States, Kaul said.

He expects VSATs to go head-to-head in this market with terrestrial-based networks. For example, a corporation such as McDonald’s might select a VSAT provider along with a DSL provider and allow individual franchises to determine what network solution best serves their needs.
