Researchers Find Mars Landing Sites
Using the Mars Global Surveyor in orbit around the red planet, researchers have discovered the landing site of the Viking Lander 2 and possibly the site where the Mars Polar Lander crashed in December 1999.
Data collected by the Mars Orbiter Camera aboard the Mars Global Surveyor was used to identify the two sites. Malin Space Science Systems operates the Mars Orbiter Camera, which the company built in conjunction with the California Institute of Technology. Previously, the camera had been used to identify the landing sites of Viking Lander 1, Mars Pathfinder and the two Mars Exploration Rovers.
