The Safety-Star system developed by Premier GPS has been approved for use on the Globalstar satellite telephone network, Globalstar said.

Adding Safety-Star–which is used to monitor the status of workers–to the Globalstar system will provide an additional level of safety for workers deployed in hazardous or remote locations where cellular or traditional radio communications may not be available, Globalstar said.

A small remote control, similar to ones used to remotely unlock vehicle doors is used to check-in with a GPS unit located in a vehicle, Globalstar said. The worker depresses the fob to start the system and to check in at prescribed times. If the button is not reset within the allotted check-in time, a distress signal is sent from the main unit via the Globalstar network to multiple locations.

The application is targeted at workers in industries such as forestry, oil and gas, remote construction, mining, border protection, fish and wildlife, rural and urban police, law enforcement, and the military and government agencies.
