The Miami Herald reported late last week that the Florida House Criminal Justice Committee unanimously approved a bill that would require sex offenders on parole to wear a tracking device using GPS data to provide state authorities with real-time location information. The bill comes on the heels of the confession by John Evander Couey, a convicted sex offender, that he killed nine-year-old Jessica Lunsford in a story that captured national headlines last month. The report cited a state Department of Corrections estimate that tracking future sex offenders could cost the state more than $13 million annually. The bill is expected to easily pass through the Florida’s House and Senate, the report said.
