MTG Sees Baltic Numbers Leap
Viasat Broadcasting ended 2004 with 680,000 digital pay-TV subscribers across Scandinavia and the Baltics. This is compared to 629,000 at the end of 2003. This was one of the highlights as Modern Times Group (MTG), the owners of the Viasat direct-to-home (DTH) satellite television operation, announced its full year results. It has been a challenging year for the operator, but with aggressive new channel launches in the Nordic region, it is well placed to continue its growth.
While the company is a key player across the Nordic region, it hopes that its Baltic operation continues to show encouraging signs. At the end of December 2004, the operator had 15,000 DTH subscribers in the Baltic region. This compared with 4,000 subscribers at the end of September 2004. This follows the introduction of aggressive new subscriber offers in the region and the shut down of the legacy conditional access (CA) system in the fall.
