Stratellite On Track For 2005 Launch
While this is not about the future launch of a space-based asset, Satellite News has been keeping a close eye on the developments of what are being called “stratellites,” because there is the potential for these airships (that will sit at an altitude of between 55,000 and 65,000 feet) to take some revenue and market share from traditional satellite operators.
In its latest update, GlobeTel Communications Corp. [GTEL] last week said its wholly owned subsidiary Sanswire Networks LLC is on track to launch its prototype stratellite in January 2005. Once it reaches its position, Sanswire will conduct tests on the voice and data quality and the range of transmission during a 60-day period. The stratellite will be launched and reclaimed multiple times during the course of the testing period to gauge the guidance systems and flight capabilities.
If successful, the immediate logical applications for this alternative to satellites will be for earth observation and the creation of instant wide area networks over metropolitan areas. But there also have been talks about stratellites carrying transponders and offering more advanced communications services, including broadcasting. The technology still has not proved to be a viable alternative yet, but the potential is there. Satellite News will continue to monitor development in this arena.
