Mediaset: DTT Could Impact Sky Italia

By Staff Writer | November 11, 2004

Federico di Chio, the head of the digital terrestrial television (DTT) project at Mediaset, believes the breadth of the DTT offer could put pressure on direct to home (DTH) operator Sky Italia. Mediaset, one of Italy’s largest private communication and broadcasting groups, will be offering numerous channels via DTT, including Italian league soccer on a PPV basis.

di Chio told Satellite Today, “Sky Italia will have two issues to face. The first is related to the penetration of DTT. The multichannel offer could affect the ‘basic’ offer of Sky. The other is the PPV offer, which could affect the premium offer of Sky.” di Chio says only between 16 percent and 18 percent of the population have access to satellite TV with Sky, and his company plans to target the other 80 percent. An in-depth interview with Federico di Chio can be found in the Nov. 10 issue of Inside Digital TV.
