Lions’ Gate Taps Satellite For Film Distribution

By Staff Writer | October 1, 2004

Satellite Today has learned that “The Final Cut,” a new science-fiction film starring Robin Williams, will be distributed exclusively to 115 AMC Theaters in 27 markets via satellite technology instead of sending physical copies to each theater. The film’s distributor, Lion’s Gate, is calling this the first major Hollywood film to be distributed via satellite.

Satellite distribution of films looks to be a potentially huge market, and it could open movie theaters up to a wide variety of other entertainment options, including live-via- satellite concerts and other pay-per-view-type events. Whether it can provide some savings in theater operations that will be passed onto the customer in the form of lower ticket prices remains to be seen.
