By Staff Writer | March 16, 2004

Eutelsat announced its W3A communication satellite was launched successfully by a Proton rocket marketed by International Launch Services (ILS). The flawless mission from the Baikonur Cosmodrome will allow Eutelsat to bring its new satellite into service at 7 degrees East this May.

The satellite will replace W3 and will substantially increase the business potential at a strategic orbital location in Eutelsat’s system that serves Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Giuliano Berretta, Eutelsat CEO, commented, “W3A has been designed to optimize the business potential at one of our long-standing orbital locations that already serve blue-chip clients, such as the EBU, Reuters, Digiturk and Hughes Network Systems. In addition to supporting delivery of a full range of services to Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, this new satellite almost doubles our capacity over sub-Saharan Africa, thereby increasing our ability to serve users for business networks and for broadband services, such as voice over IP (VoIP), Internet access and distance-learning services.”
