Paris-based Thomson [NYSE: TMS] has signed a deal with Belgium-based Alfacam to provide the company with 5 million euros ($5.8 million) worth of broadcast equipment. Alfacam will use the equipment, which includes production switches, cameras, and modular products, to support the launch of Euro 1080, a satellite-based channel that will deliver high-definition (HD) programming throughout Europe, Thomson said. Thomson also has made a financial commitment to promote the channel launch and will work with broadcasters and other media companies to ensure the successful development of a HDTV standard in Europe, the company said.
