Hughes Network Systems, a broadband satellite subsidiary of Hughes Electronics [NYSE: GMH], has joined the Wi-Fi Alliance, a non-profit organization formed to certify interoperability of IEEE 802.11 products and to promote Wi-Fi as the global, wireless LAN standard across all market segments. Pradeep Kaul, executive vice president of HNS, said the goals of the Wi-Fi Alliance are “strategically aligned with HNS’ objective of delivering interoperable Wi-Fi Internet access solutions.” Membership in the alliance, which has over 200 members, is open to all companies that support the 802.11 family of standards.
