Broadband high-speed Internet via satellite service skyDSL, operated by German ISP Strato, has moved from DFS Kopernikus 2 FM 2 (28.5 degrees East) to the more powerful Télécom 2D satellite at 8 degrees West.

Strato said customers can now surf the Internet at a speed of up to 4,000 kbit/s with 8.000 kbit/s planned until the end of the year. Furthermore, the satellite move extends skyDSL’s footprint, allowing the Berlin-based ISP to market to service in further European countries. While the data is transmitted at high-speed via satellite, the return channel relies on a conventional modem or ISDN telephone line connection. As part of a special marketing campaign, all new and current skyDSL users can download 100 MB at 4.000 kbit/s for free until the end of this year, corresponding to a value of DM80 (E40.90). With more than 1.4 million domains hosted, Strato claims to be Europe’s market leader.
