SatPort Infrastructure has completed the acquisition of Speedcast’s teleport business, including 12 teleports and related infrastructure. SatPort, which is backed by EQT Infrastructure, made the acquisition to become a carrier-neutral platform for satellite ground infrastructure.

The deal includes 12 teleports across 11 countries and five continents, with more than 100 employees joining the company. In addition, Speedcast signed a long-term infrastructure services agreement to be a SatPort customer. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed in the Nov. 3 announcement.

Speedcast stated the deal focuses its resources on the SIGMA intelligent edge network management platform and transitions the company toward a “more asset-light model.”

EQT Infrastructure established SatPort as a new portfolio company as part of its bid to buy Eutelsat’s ground network infrastructure. However, that deal was not realized. Since then, SatPort landed an agreement with Telesat to serve as a non-exclusive partner to build multiple landing stations around the globe, built to Telesat’s design specs.

SatPort stated this acquisition makes the company a fully operational carrier-neutral global platform with a network of teleports.

“Just as we have seen in towers, fiber, and data centers, we believe the next phase of growth will be supported by independent, specialized infrastructure platforms that can serve multiple customers at scale,” EQT Infrastructure Partner Carl Sjölund said in a statement. “With SatPort, we are building a global leader in this emerging infrastructure category. The acquisition of Speedcast’s teleport business is an important milestone in that journey.”

SatPort is led by CEO Joe Spytek, a former CEO of Speedcast. He was the CEO when the company exited bankruptcy in 2021.
