Kymeta’s Kestrel u5 terminal has received certification for compliance with railway standards ahead of connectivity trials with some of Europe’s largest rail operators.
The Kestrel u5 is a flat panel terminal designed to provide high-speed connectivity aboard trains for both passengers and freight operations. The terminal can transmit uplink and downlink at the same time and supports the ability to switch between Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) and Geostationary Orbit (GEO) as an add-on capability.
TÜV Rheinland, which is Europe’s leading body for third-party validation for the rail industry, certified compliance with the industry’s EN 50155, EN 45545-2 and EN 50121 standards, among other specifications.
Kymeta said it plans to begin connectivity trials with rail operators over the next 60 days and the company is aiming for a full-scale rollout across European and global markets. The tests will include high-speed assessments up to 360 km/h and be designed to demonstrate the Kestrel u5’s high-performance and reliable connectivity.
Kymeta CEO Manny Mora said this certification is a significant milestone. “For too long, rail connectivity has been constrained by inconsistent coverage, limiting both the passenger experience and critical operational capabilities. With the TÜV certification, the terminal can now perform exactly as intended, delivering a new kind of secure, always-on connectivity to the rail industry,” Mora said in a statement.
