MDA Space has invested $10 million Canadian dollars ($7 million) into spaceport company Maritime Launch Services, becoming an equity owner and strategic partner in the venture.

Maritime Launch Services is developing Spaceport Nova Scotia, with the goal of making it Canada’s first commercial orbital launch complex. The spaceport is in Nova Scotia, on the Atlantic coast, near Canso.

Maritime Launch Services called the investment from Canada’s top space manufacturer as a milestone to advance Canada’s sovereign launch capability. The company plans to use the investment to accelerate development at the spaceport. MDA Space is expected to be an “operational partner” and will support development and future operations at the spaceport.

“By combining MDA Space’s world-class technical heritage with our operational focus at Spaceport Nova Scotia, we are creating the conditions our launch vehicle clients need: reliability, responsiveness, and integration across the full mission campaign. Together, we are building a complete sovereign launch solution that strengthens Canadian innovation, drives economic growth, and enhances security in space,” commented Maritime Launch Services President and CEO Stephen Matier.

This comes after last month, Export Development Canada provided Maritime Launch a $10 million Canadian dollar senior credit facility.
