GMV has won two new key European Defence Agency (EDA) contracts, for Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. The company announced June 2 that it will work on two projects, SAFETERM and Artificial Intelligence in Guidance, Navigation and Control for Aerial Applications (AI-GNCAIR).

AI-GNCAIR studies the take-up of Artificial Intelligence in Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) for aerial applications. AI-GNCAIR forms part of EDA’s strategic research agenda under CapTech GNC, which studies how to integrate AI into GNC systems and the necessary roadmaps to close the EU’s technology gaps.

The SAFETERM project’s purpose is to improve the flight termination procedures of Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) RPASs. Its main task is to increase the general safety level in emergency situations involving multiple failures. In this situation it would switch to safe, alternative landing areas by means of computer vision. This involves an extremely complex task that represents a huge advance on traditional image-processing techniques.

GMV is a supplier of ground control systems for commercial telecommunications satellite operators and a key European player in the ground segment of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (EGNOS and Galileo).
