July 28, 2022
In its Q2 2022 financial results, manufacturer Northrop Grumman Corp.’s (NGC) Space Systems division reported:
- NGC Space Systems logged about $3 billion in sales in the second quarter, up 8% compared to the same time last year. This is an increase of $231 million, due to higher sales in the Launch & Strategic Missiles business area due to ramp-up on development programs including Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GDSB).
- Northrop Grumman saw higher volume on restricted programs and the Space Development Agency (SDA) Tranche 1 Transport Layer (T1TL). The segment saw lower volume on the James Webb Space Telescope program after its successful launch in December 2021.
- Space has the largest backlog of any division in the company, at $38.9 billion, up 5% from the start of 2022.
- Highlights – NGC received a ULA order for $2.1 billion in GEM63 solid rocket boosters to support Amazon’s Project Kuiper launches as a significant second quarter award.
- The overall company pulled in $8.8 billion in sales, a 4% drop compared to the same time last year.
- CEO Kathy Warden on an investor call: “A tight labor market and extended material lead times have caused headwinds.”
- Still, Warden is sticking with her projected double-digit growth forecast for the Space segment in 2022. She said that national security space is one of the strongest growth drivers for the company.
