Iridium and Orbcomm company Skywave have a new strategic partnership for industrial IoT to bring Iridium’s Short Burst Data (SBD) services to heavy equipment OEM customers. This is the first time the two companies have worked together.
Under the partnership announced Tuesday, Iridium SBD is being embedded directly into Skywave satellite IoT terminals for applications like remote monitoring, diagnostics, predictive maintenance, service support, and the modernization of existing connected equipment fleets. The solution combines Skywave’s intelligent network orchestration solution with Iridium’s Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network.
Orbcomm launched the Skywave brand last year for its intelligent IoT platform, aimed at helping partners build solutions with the company’s industrial IoT technology. Skywave orchestrates industrial IoT connectivity for OEMs across satellite, cellular, and Wi-Fi networks.
Orbcomm CEO Sameer Agrawal said this partnership supports Skywave’s mission to become the “intelligent networking layer for industrial IoT.”
“Heavy equipment OEMs are looking for ways to modernize legacy deployments, expand connected service capabilities and deliver reliable digital experiences wherever their equipment operates. By combining Iridium’s global LEO capabilities with Skywave’s platform, we are enabling OEMs to build and scale those capabilities across multiple networks,” Agrawal said.
