Viasat’s enterprise business is rolling out a new IoT Nano connectivity service with two-way messaging, powered by Orbcomm’s OGx IoT service.

The IoT nano service is designed for businesses to monitor and control fixed and mobile assets in remote and challenging environments, in industries like agriculture, transport, utilities, mining, and environmental monitoring. It offers two-way messaging and support for messages of up to 1 MB.

The service uses global coverage from Viasat’s L-band network. It also has the new capabilities of Orbcomm’s OGx service, which is an upgrade from IsatData Pro launched last year. OGx has message delivery speeds, larger message sizes, and new hardware options compared to IsatData Pro.

The new service will continue to support IDP mode for existing customers, but also include reduced power consumption, larger messages, and faster speeds that allow for new, higher value use cases in OGx mode. Viasat has multiple terminals that are compatible with the service, including Orbcomm terminals. OEMs and solution providers are also able to build their own terminals and devices.

“The IoT Nano service represents a significant advancement in providing flexible, scalable, and energy-efficient IoT connectivity to businesses operating in the most remote corners of the world,” commented Andy Kessler, Viasat’s vice president of Enterprise and Land Mobile.
