Hughes to Connect Sites with Madagascar and Nigeria With Cellular Backhaul

By Rachel Jewett | July 18, 2023

Africa Mobile Networks (AMN) has selected the Hughes Network Systems’ Jupiter System ground platform to backhaul 2G, 3G, and 4G cellular network traffic in Madagascar and Nigeria. AMN will use Hughes Jupiter gateways and remote terminals to connect several hundred cellular towers via satellite, the companies announced Tuesday.

AMN works with mobile network operators (MNOs) in Africa and helps them serve hard-to-reach areas. AMN CEO Michael Darcy said the Jupiter system meets the company’s CapeEx, OpEx, and business support requirements for satellite backhaul.

Hughes Jupiter technology uses software-defined satellite networking, dynamic inroute reconfiguration for efficiency, and a “system on a chip” in every user terminal that can support increasingly high speeds

“The biggest multinational mobile network operators in Africa depend on AMN’s unique networking business models to serve their customers, whilst we depend on partners like Hughes for the ideal technology for the rural environment along with reliable commercial and technical support,” Darcy said.
