According to Euroconsult’s recently published executive brief, "Prospects for Cellular Backhaul in Fast-Growing Economies":

The market of cellular backhaul over satellite has been a vibrant vertical segment for the satellite sector in the second half of the last decade, with strong growth observed in all emerging regions. While Sub-Saharan Africa has been the largest historical market for cellular backhaul, accelerated growth has been observed in recent years in a variety of countries such as India, Brazil and Indonesia. The number of sites using satellite backhaul more than tripled between 2007 and 2012 to reach close to 16,000 sites for a satellite capacity use of around 15.6 GHz.

Capacity revenues from cellular backhaul in fast-growing economies could reach $1.1 billion by 2023, up from around $500 million in 2012, which corresponds to a 7% CAGR over the ten- year period.

The regions assessed present significant differences in terms of structure, dynamics and accessibility for each market player. Overall, Sub-Saharan Africa and the region defined as "Rest of Asia" should be the largest markets by 2023, followed by Latin America.
