[Satellite TODAY 08-23-12] The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has filed a lawsuit against pay-TV operator Dish Network for allegedly violating “Do Not Call” rules associated with telemarketing, according to documents filed Aug. 23 with the U.S. District Court of Central Illinois.
The suit claims that since 2007, Dish Network, or telemarketers working on behalf of the satellite broadcaster, made “millions of outbound telephone calls to phone numbers of persons who have previously stated that they do not wish to receive an outbound telephone call made by or on behalf of Dish Network.”
Dish Network has publicly denied the claims. In a separate statement, FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz said the commission would continue to vigorously enforce the Do Not Call rules. The regulatory fine per violation committed before February 2009 is up to $11,000 and up to $16,000 for violations committed after that date, according to the Federal Civil Penalties Inflation Adjustment Act.
