[Satellite TODAY 05-24-11] The global M2M market will be worth 2.3 billion euros ($2.94 billion) in 2016, according to a new study by French telecoms and satellite consultancy, IDATE. It is IDATE’s first study on the M2M market.
While M2M is a growing market, it is one where satellite only plays a small role currently. According to its research, IDATE says satellite only has a small share of the M2M market, which is largely dominated by cellular systems, and says satellite has around 2 percent in terms of volume and 6 percent of revenue in 2011.
“While it is sectors like fleet management and maritime security that have driven the sector’s development up to now, new markets have been emerging over the past several years, especially in the area of energy, but also in the homeland security/military arena,” IDATE Head of Satellite Practice Maxime Baudry said in a statement.
