[Satellite TODAY 05-14-12] Arianespace will launch Vietnam’s second satellite and Sky Perfect JSAT’s JCSAT-13 satellite May 16 from the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana, Vietnam Posts and Telecommunication Group (VNPT) and Vietnam Telecom International confirmed May 11.
The $300 million Vinasat-2 satellite will be placed at the 131.8 degrees East orbital slot, covering Southeast Asia and neighboring countries during its 15-year life span.
In a statement, Vietnam Telecom International Deputy Director Hoang Cong Lam said his organization plans to start operating the satellite for commercial purposes in July. VNPT Director Hoang Minh Thong added that his company expects to recoup its investment in the satellite in 10 to12 years.
Vinasat-2’s operation center will be located in Hanoi at the same facility that controls Vietnam’s first satellite, Vinasat-1, which was launched in April, 2008.
