[Satellite TODAY 04-05-12] Thales has completed its acquisition of privately held tactical satellite communications terminal provider Tampa Microwave and has inherited related products for defense, government and commercial customers, the companies confirmed April 4.

Tampa Microwave designs, develops and manufactures satcom manpack terminals that are designed to provide high-bandwidth, voice, video and data battlefield communications at the tactical level. Thales completed a review of the acquisition by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), which determined that there were no national security concerns with the transaction.
Tampa Microwave will operate as a subsidiary of Thales Communications — a Thales USA company that operates under a proxy agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense. The business will maintain its location in Tampa, Fla. Thales said the current Tampa Microwave management team would remain unchanged.
“By leveraging the proven expertise of both Thales and Tampa Microwave, we plan to further expand and diversify our communications technology to meet the critical challenges warfighters are facing on the battlefield,” Thales USA President and CEO Allan Cameron said in a statement.
