[Satellite TODAY 03-06-12] L-3 Telemetry-West (L-3 TW) has signed a contract with Iridium Communications to upgrade the satellite control segment (SCS) for the Iridium NEXT constellation program using its InControl software suite, the companies confirmed March 5.

The Iridium NEXT satellite network, scheduled to launch in 2015, will include 66 low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. L-3 TW’s InControl software aims to provide the Iridium NEXT SCS with command and control functions. The SCS monitors, manages and controls all elements of the current Iridium satellite network and consists of redundant system control facilities, a primary operations center located in Leesburg, Va., and a backup operations center located in Chandler, Ariz.
“L-3 TW is a valued Iridium partner, playing a key role in enabling Iridium NEXT so that it ultimately changes the way people and organizations connect, operate and live,” Iridium Executive Vice President of Satellite Development Scott Smith said in a statement.
Financial details of the contract were not disclosed.
