[Satellite TODAY 02-14-12] SingTel profits dropped 9.6 percent in its fiscal 2012 third quarter compared with the same period in 2011, despite a 4.4 percent increase in profits generated by its Optus subsidiary, according to the company’s latest financial results issued Feb. 13.

Optus increased its operating revenue 1.5 percent to $2.42 billion with mobile revenue contributing $1.62 billion to the total. The company also increased its mobile customer base by 182,000 year-over-year to reach a total of 9.41 million subscribers.
SingTel posted a 13 percent increase in overall mobile customers to 434 million, but strong gains in Singapore’s mobile customer market share led to higher acquisition and retention costs, SingTel’s management said in the report.
The company added that weakened currencies from its smaller regional businesses also contributed to the new loss, particularly in India.
