[Satellite TODAY 01-19-12] South African Internet service provider Vox Telecom will launch a low-cost satellite broadband service covering most of South Africa in June, the company confirmed Jan 18.
The launch follows Vox Telecom’s deal with UAE-based satellite provider Yahsat in May 2010. Vox Telecom said it would commence physical coverage tests of the broadband service once Yahsat launches its YahClick Y1B satellite on Feb 21. YahClick aims to use Ka-band to offer download speeds of up to 5 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 3 Mbps.
Vox Telecom said the Y1B satellite would provide back-up connectivity in metropolitan areas and connectivity to rural areas in South Africa that are both un-served and under-served.
